The Hairy Ape is a 1922 expressionist play by American playwright Eugene o'Neill . It is about a laborer known as yank , the protagonist of the play. As he searches for a sense of belonging in a world controlled by the rich.
The play is divided into eight scenes. And about the negative effects of materialism. In the fireman's forecastle of a cruise ship that has just sailed from new York for a trip across the Atlantic ocean. Yank portrayed as a leader among the men, Mildred Douglas ( daughter of a steel tycoon ) interested in social work and help the poor. After arguing with her aunt she planned to visit the ship's stokehole . When she enters in the stokehole , Yank ignores her and when he turns to see her , she afraid by her appearance and calls him ' a filthy beast ' and faints.
Yank is infuriated at Mildred for claiming that he resembles a hairy Ape. He decided to take revenge of it. After a time , when ship returned yank and long thought about upper class and avenge with Mildred. In this case he also arrested and imprisoned. He feels it like a zoo and he is an animal in that cage. After prison , yank visits the local IWW office and join it but his aim of revenge with steel company , they thought him as dangerous not accept him.
When Yank visits the zoo , he thought that gorilla and he are the same and try to sympathize with him. But gorilla crushes his rib with tight hug and yank dies. He thoughts he belongs to nowhere.
Yank believed his work was worth something . But when he is called ' a filthy beast ' by mildred. He wants to revenge against upper class that relies solely on him. But by the time he comes to know he belongs to nowhere. He comes to know his position in the world. O' Neill explores the depths of the existential crisis. But also explores the primitive nature of man.
The play also displays the treatment of the industrial working class. The industrial environment presents the world of the rich capital class and working class . Yank also part of it , unable to find belonging anywhere where he goes.
Yank was very confident that without peolpe like him , the ship would not run but upper class become rich by exploiting the workers . After the Mildred's entry his illusion of his importance breaks down. He became outcast for other fellowman to whom he was superior.
The knowledge of the reality is far from his perception makes the start of his downfall. His search for a place to belong is eventually his death.
There are some significant and important symbols throughout the play. Mildred with her pure white dress is a symbol of pure life. The stokehole also symbolizes the helish nature of the men's lives. Steel comes often in the play. The bars of the prison , mildred daughter of steel making man that represents the hard and irresistible fact of separation and enslavrment.
