' A cup of Tea ' is a 1922 short story by Katherine Mansfield . It was first published in the ' Story teller ' in may 1922. Katherine Mansfield born in New Zealand but lived most of her working life as a writer in London. She was an expert at writing this kind of story.
A cup of tea is set in 1920s London. The Rosemary fell , protagonist is wealthy young matron . In an antique shop , she examines expensive jewellery box , but didn't purchase anything. While she was returning ,approached by Miss Smith , a poor girl who ask for enough money to buy tea. Then Rosemary takes girl home. she wants to show her that ' The rich prolpe did have Hearts .'
When Rosemary ' s husband philip comes in , surprised and ask Rosemary about her and disapproval of it. When Rosemary resist of it. Philip plays with Rosemary' s jealousy and insecurity by telling her how pretty miss Smith is .then Rosemary sends the girl away. Then inform her husband . She asking Philip , " Am I pretty ? " . The story ends with this question.
We find materialism theme in the story. The little box that Rosemary sees in the antique shop . Mansfield may be highlighting the importance of material things to Rosemary. Mansfield also appears it by the setting.
Theme of social classes also used by Mansfield. She manages to highlight how different Rosemary is from others . Class difference exist between Rosemary and those around her.
When Philip admires Miss Smith , Rosemary changes attitude towards her. Rosemary jealous of Miss Smith but also appears to be insecure about her own physical appearance. Philip does not want to associate himself with Miss Smith. Because she consider to be of a lower class. it also presents theme of class structure.
We can see class consciousness in description of Rosemary ' s wealth , luxurious lifestyle and belongings v/ s the girl who has not eaten since long.
Theme of Innervoid , emptiness related to the theme of materialism . Rosemary has to be generous towards other to defeat the Innervoid that she feels , which material belonging can't fill.
