Interpretation Challenge: Breath: The Shortest Play by Samuel Beckett



The script of the play:
CURTAIN Up
1. Faint light on stage littered with miscellaneous rubbish. Hold about five seconds.
2. Faint brief cry and immediately inspiration and slow increase of light together reaching maximum - together in about ten seconds. Silence and hold for about five seconds.
3. Expiration and slow decrease of light together reaching minimum together (light as in 1) in about ten seconds and immediately cry as before. Silence and hold about five seconds. 

CURTAIN Down

This 30 seconds play deals with theme like absurdity and theory of  Existentialism. That life is full of absurdity and our existence is meaningless. In this play nothing happens very difficult to understand the play same way it is very difficult  to understand meaning and purpose of life.

 There is on stage wastage of hospital - Medicine and strachur .also garbage of computer and keyboard. It reflects nothing. Start with cry and end with cry it shown nothingness. There is only sound of breath. As same sequence of breath indicates life events with same absurdity. Breathing is habit , life is habit. Thus life is succession of habits. 

Existentialism means the search for the self. This theory reject systems which propose to have definitive answer to the question of meaning and purpose in life. This answer are conditioning only . There is no answer of the reason behind our existence. As we born, we fill absurdity of things, meaninglessness of life and want answer but never find the answer.

This play concerns with this concept of absurdity . At the end there is nothing only wastage of habits and choices of life which have never meaning and purpose...
