T.S. Eliot ' Tradition and individual talent '
                                                               
  1. How would you like to explain Eliot's concept of Tradition? Do you agree with it?
    I agree with the Eliot's concept of , Tradition and individual talent.because the creative artist possessed the close relationship and interdependence of the past and the present.The relationship of the poet's work to the great works of the past.Tradition is a dynamic idea and larger term.tradition is essential part of culture.if self merge with tradition, it will beautify with more meaning.                                                                                           

   2.What do you understand by Historical Sense? (Use these quotes to explain your understanding)
    • "The historical sense involves a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence"

    • This historical sense, which is a sense of the timeless as well as of the temporal and of the timeless and of the temporal together, is what makes a writer traditional. .                                                   
Eliot's concept of historical sense is a dynamic one and not static , and is forever in a state of flux. The historical sense enables a writer to write not only with his own generation in mind, but from past to present with continuity of Tradition. Historical  sense ,a sense of timeless and temporal , for example, in Indian context Ram and Krishna alive in our life.    .      .                                                                      .        

 3.  What is the relationship between “tradition” and “the individual talent,” according to the poet T. S. Eliot .                             
According to Eliot tradition obtain with an effort and inherent.there is no slavish imitation of Tradition.A poet have to developed of a great judgement of  past writers and shift of  greatness.Eliot said that no poet , no artist of any art has his complete meaning alone.his appreciation only with the dead poets and artist of history.                                                                                                                              .          

  4.Explain: "Some can absorb knowledge, the more tardy must sweat for it. Shakespeare acquired more essential history from Plutarch than most men could from the whole British Museum".      

 Ans. Eliot demands from readers and poet to write with Shakespearean has not much knowledge of other languages than English, and no record of his education at any university.though he had wide array of characters and as well as human nature .Shakespeare seemed to absorbed his age and become exceptional than every poet of the age .Matthew Arnold said that critic should  provide fresh ideas to the author.                                                                                         

 5.Explain: "Honest criticism and sensitive appreciation is directed not upon the poet but upon the poetry"
               Eliot compares the theory with chemical process.the combination of  sulfuric acid , takes place only if the Platinum is present , Platinum has remained neutral and unchanged.the mind of poet is the shred of Platinum. Eliot says that emotion and feelings are the elements  which entering the presence of poet's mind and acting as a catalyst.we can say both elements important for experiment, same happened in great work of art .                                                                                                         

 7.Explain: " Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality."

 Poetry is , " emotion recollected in tranquility ". The emotion of art is impersonal, and the poet can not  reach this impersonality without surrendering himself wholly to the work to be done.      .                                                                                                                                                   

 8.Write two points on which one can write critique on 'T.S. Eliot as a critic'.

   1.The poet's sense of Tradition and the impersonality of the poetry are complementary things.                                  .                              
2.The relationship of the poet's Work to the great works of the past.comparison and judgement are possible with the standards of the past.Two things measured by each other.
