Heart of Darkness
Heart of Darkness was first published as a three part serial story in ' Buchwood ' s magazine. It has been widely re- published and translated into many languages. In 1998 , the modern library ranked Heart of Darkness 67th on their list of the 100 best novels in English of the 20th century.
Heart of Darkness ( 1899 ) is a novella by polish- English novelist Joseph Conrad about a narrated voyage up the Congo river in to the Congo , free State in the so called Heart of Africa . Central to Conrad ' s work is the idea that there is little difference between so called civilized people and those described as savages ; Heart of Darkness raises questions about imperialism and racism.
Heart of Darkness centers around Marlow , an introspective sailor and his journey up the Congo river to meet Kartz , reputed to an idealistic man of great abilities. Marlow takes a job as a riverboat captain with the company. He and his company are attracted by African natives and some of the crew are killed . Kurtz is reputed by ill , making the stall in fixing the ship all the more costly. Marlow eventually gots the parts he needs to repair his ship . Marlow and his company arrives at kurtz ' s inner station.
Kurtz has established himself as a God with the natives and has gone to brutal raids in the surrounding territory in search of Ivory. The pilgrims bring Kurtz out of the station house on a stretcher and a large group of native warriors pours out of the forest and surrounds them.
The Russian reveals to Marlow after swearing him to secrecy. That Kurtz had ordered the attack on the steamer to make them believe that he was dead. In order they might turn back and leave him to his plans.

Kurtz disappeared in the night and Marlow goes out in search of him. Marlow stops him and convince him to return to the ship. Kurtz' s health is failing fast . Kurtz entrasts marlow with a packet of documents . Eloquent pamphlet on civilizing the savages ends with message , " Exterminate all the brutes ! " Kurtz dies , uttering his last words , " The horror ! The horror ! " He returns to Europe , goes to Kurtz ' s mistress , she asked her last words and Marlow lies that her name wad his last words .
Heart of Darkness explores the issues surrounding imperialism in complicated ways . At the very least the incidental scenery of the book offers a harsh picture of colonial enterprise. Kurtz described his own treatment of the natives with the words ' suppression ' and ' Extermination ' . He not hides the fact that he rules through violence and intimidation. madness as a result of imperialism , in novella madness as a result of being removed from one's social context and allowed to be the sole arbiter of one's own actions. The novella an exploration of hypocrisy , ambiguity and moral confusion.
