Introduction :

 Language we used as a means of communication . for internal communication between members we use mother tongue and native language , for external communication with people of other culture we should have knowledge of global language and international language.


 India there is a existence of many  culture. This all culture have different languages. They using mother tongue for communication with each other. But to communicate with national and intranational people need of learning global language.
Learning another language makes one bigger , gives a wider vision , makes one aware of the subtleties that we don’t get in one language.

If wee see background of India and English language. Then there is very poor social background for it. Because English taught only as a subject in primary or secondary school level. Only as a means of subject rather then to taught student English as a language , its learning not even on large scale. So there is very complicated view of people about learn English language.

Students of the rural schools face a number of problems. English is their second language. Learning a second language means acquiring a system of rules, but just as a very little is known about these rules, even less is known about how such rule systems are acquired. Students find themselves unable to express in English. They have no idea of proper sentence structure. They do not know proper pronunciation, spellings and grammatical rules.

 The sole objective of the teacher and the learner remain to clear the exams. The students never realize the importance of learning English as a language.
In graduation level , English as compulsory subject taught. Not aim of student and teacher to learn English as an important link language . there is no enough opportunities to learn English . because teacher are not so brilliant in English in some states, and have  lack of basics knowledge of English language. So condition of English teacher in India should be developed . student are afraid
of English as very difficult language  because they are unaware about the language.


English language public instruction began in India in the 1830s during the rules of East India company. In 1835, English replaced Persian as the official language of the Company. Lord  Macaulay played a major role in introducing English and western concepts to education in India. He supported the replacement of Persian by English as the official language, the use of English as the medium of instruction in all schools, and the training of English-speaking Indians as teachers.

Since from independence , the need for English was realized in field of higher education and research .

English is used all over the world not out of any imposition but because of the realization that it has certain advantages. A very important reason for regarding English as a world language is that the world's knowledge is enshrined in English. It is a progressive language. It is dynamic and flexible. Over and above English is universally renowned for its power of expression and its rich literature.

The changing times have witnessed the growing importance of English language in all walks of life. It does not seem that non-native speakers or as a second language speakers. Conscious and unconscious use of the words in our everyday conversation from the English language bears evidence to this fact.

English as a global language , when people from different background meets , then for communicating need a knowledge of common language . English used as means of communication used in government , the media and educational system.it will connects us with world and prevents isolation. Is provides opportunities to get employment anywhere we want.


English is one of the most widely used international language. In India English language produced by bruisers , because they want clerk. By the time English spreads and nowadays become language of all trade , industry , information and knowledge.

English is richest in literature and widely used language. The spread of internet technology has networked the world and is like a global village for communicating. English used as first language , second language and as a foreign language. In India English taught as foreign or as second language. English as a second language functions primarily as an interstate or international link language. Learning of classical language like Sanskrit , will not help you in everyday life or insight into a variety of linguistic problems.

 H.  Kabir‘s  suggestion which is - We must remodel our courses in English at the secondary stage and recognize that the learning of English is not an end in itself but only the acquisition of an instrument for adding to our knowledge .The emphasis must therefore ,shift from literature to the simple languages of every day.

English – our “ Window on the world “ language of science and technology , trade and commerce , political science , economics and international relations and industrial development.
English as individual levels useful as the language of upward social mobility , socio economic mobility as well as language of opportunities.

Modernization :
The concept of modernization and internationalism were invoked and English became part of tradition in Indian languages. English as metaphor of the “ Window “ . English is the language of liberal modern thinking.

Mythology :
Major Indian languages become “ regional languages “ ; regional in opposition to “ National “. This gave rise to language planning. It created whole set of rules and new mythology. English became one pan- Indian language that would promote national integration .

English is the link language. Indian languages are the walls , that enclose us in darkness , and English as window , that lets us in the light of reason and modernization .

English is used among Indians as a link language and virtually it is the first language for many well educated Indians. It is the second language for many, who speak more than one language in India. The English language is a tie that helps bind the many segments of our society together.

English plays an important role in producing and promoting new trades. Its importance for better knowledge of science and technology , social science , industry and business. It is language of books , newspaper , airport, academic conference etc.. Expert said that English learning is very important aspect of life.

English as library language to enable the learner to keep abreast of the latest accretions to the difficult fields of knowledge and it can enable the learner to pursue higher / professional education.

According to NCERT ( National council of Educational research and training ) :
The second language help the individual in maintaining his personal relations with the people beyond his linguistic group.
To help the individual to carry on business purposes with larger group , or nation  for identification. For developing international relation and communication English language learning is most important  as global language.

The significance of English language spread widely in present scientific and technological world.in pursue of higher education need of proficient in English language. It will help in communication with international people. Because in 21st century English is widely spoken language.

I would have English as an associate, additional language, which can be used not because of facilities, but because I do not wish the people of non-Hindi areas to feel that certain doors of advance are closed to them. So I would have it as an alternative language as long as people of India require it"                 - Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru,

English has become the language of Governments, Education, advancement, jobs and a symbol of self-improvement. The new ideas about language, the dimensions of usage and the new development in educational technology have given rise to branches in the use of English.


Conclusion :

 In present time India , much need of improvement in field of teaching and learning English language. There is a lack of awareness in people for English language , as means of subject only. Motivation in students for learning English should developed. Stereotypes in minds of people for mother tongue and foreign language  needed change for modernization. Faculty teaching techniques should developed as soon as possible. Purpose of teaching English and learning English should be in clear terms in minds of people.
