Thinking activity : To The Lighthouse
1.How can you explain that 'what' Virginia Woolf wanted to say (for example, the complexity of human relationship, the everyday battles that people are at in their relationship with near and dear ones, the struggle of a female artist against the values of middle/upper class society etc) can only be said in the way she has said?
Virginia Woolf presented complexity of human relationship in this novel . For exa, mr. Ramsay and his behaviour towards mrs. Ramsay and other family members. The pattern of human relationship changed by the time. How mr . Ramsay ' s behaviour changed after death of mrs. Ramsay.
This novel contains great deal of straight narration and description as usual happened. That is only free flaw of thought. Communication happened only in mind. That flow of thought presented by indirect interior monologue. Virginia Woolf used this feature of stream of consciousness in this novel.
Female artist have to struggle against the values of higher class society. The dialogue between Charles tansley and Lily briscoe that , ' women can't paint ...' this suggest the patriarchal society of the time. Virginia herself have to struggle for it.
2.Do you agree: "The novel is both the tribute and critique of Mrs. Ramsay"? (Key: Take some clues from the painting of Mrs Ramsay drawn by Lily Briscoe and the article by Andre Viola and Glenn Pedersen. Can we read Mrs. R in context of the idea of Ideal Indian Woman - Karyeshu dasi, Karaneshu manthri; Bhojeshu mata, Shayaneshu rambha; Kshamayeshu dharithri, Roopeshu lakshmi; Satkarma yukta, Kuladharma pathni. )
Virginia Woolf presented the character mrs. Ramsay as an ideal lady. As an mother and wife. She is happy for her work. She wants to be immortal in memories of family. Thus she is very ideal one.
Lily Briscoe tried the painting of mrs. Ramsay and james.but she complete that drawing when mrs. Ramsay passed away. Lily thought she only as a servant and have to taking care of family only. She not able to fulfilled her wishes like her.
3.Considering symbolically, does the Lighthouse stand for Mrs. Ramsay or the narrator (Virginia Woolf herself who is categorically represented by Lily)? (Key: Take help from the presentation on Symbolism to connect Mrs. Caroline Ramsay with Lighthouse. Secondly, the narrator / author cannot fully disappear from the novel and thus the stoicism of Lily to paint and thus prove that she can paint, is symbolically presented in stoicism of Lighthouse.
Mrs. Caroline Ramsay stands as guiding star and harbours emotional safety to family and guest. She become bridge between members of the novel. She stands as strong member of family.
Lily Briscoe' s painting symbolizes woman 's struggle in patriarchal society against traditional values of upper class Victorian society. Virginia by Lily ' s painting express mrs . Ramsay and idealism of woman in society. Thus narrator have also participated in ' To The Lighthouse ' .
4. In the article by Joseph Blotner, two myths are patterned together. Name the myths? How they are zeroed down to the symbols of 'Window' and 'Lighthouse'? How does the male phallic symbol represent feminine Mrs. Ramsay? (Key: The strokes of light-beams. . . )
Here is two myth.
The concept of woman 's role in life that attributes in pagan myth. That is ' premordial goddess , zeus, Rhea , Demeter, and Persephone. There is also myth , " Hymn to Demeter ". Here comparison of Rhea with daughter Demeter as a double figure.
In this novel Oedipus complex also reflects by the character of James and mrs. Ramsay. His behaviour with his father and dangerous feeling for him. And feeling for company of mother.
5. What do you understand by the German term 'Künstlerroman'? How can you justify that 'To The Lighthouse' is 'Künstlerroman' novel?
In this novel the character " Augustus Carmichael " , a poet dreams for a great poet , but waits for a idea. As time passed , he is not able to achieve what he wants and become a commonman only.
6.Lily's Dilemma in the novel " To the Lighthouse ."
Lily stands painting , on the edge of the lawn ' . Mrs. Ramsay reflects point of Lily did not matter. She was alone and her fight against patriarchal society. As an artist she is not agree with mrs. Ramsay ' s role and responsibilities. Mrs . Ramsay said that she become immortal in minds of member. She completed that painting when she passed away. On other side , she thought she can never be like her , she love herself and her art.
7. You have compared the 'beginning' and the 'ending' of the novel and the film adaptation of the novel directed by Colin Gregg. Do you think that the novel is more poignant than the movie? If yes, do you ascribe the fact that the power of words is much greater than that of the screen / visuals?
End is also different in the film. It is significant that the words are more powerful than the visuals. The film ends very quickly. The last lines indicates " vision " that vision of Lily briscoe and mrs. Ramsay also about traditional gender roles and patriarchal society. " Fool " also significant with that term and also suggest two different ideal of life as well of women in society . That word significant lacking of something which is satisfied the society as a ideal person.
8.How do you interpret the last line of the novel ?
In last line of film , we can say that after completing the painting Lily feels that mrs. Ramsay as an ideal woman was appropriate at her place. She is fool not understand that role. Mrs. Ramsay will lived in the memories of family forever. Thus both have different vision and own importance.
9. What does the catalogue named as 'Army and Navy' signify? What does cutting of 'Refrigerator' signify?
Refrigerator in that catalogue as a tool for conservative and a symbol of preservation. It also a symbol of change , of technology and human culture . In this novel mrs. Ramsay compares with it as a prrserver of culture , she trained and shaping her children ' s minds. When james was cutting of ' refrigerator ' mrs. Ramsay stopped him. It shows her traditional role rather then changed according to modern time. That cutting indicates modern technology and changes of time , and mrs. Ramsay ' s role sem from time to time.
10.Why did Virginia give such prominence to the tale of the “Fisherman’s Wife”? In particular, why did she weave such a misogynist tale into the fabric of a book which so eloquently challenges received patriarchal notions about the roles and capabilities of women?
Virginia by the tale of ' Fisherman's wife ' prsents the ironic point on the character of novel. She compares mr, Ramsay with Fisherman's wife , rather then mrs ,Ramsay . Fisherman's wife have more and more greed and desire. Same way he had unreasonable will and desire. His need for sympathy , security and self assertion.
Virginia by this misogynistic tale also indicates mrs. Ramsay as transmitting and perpetuating harmful myths about female will and desire. She critically attacking the way this myths pointed out.
