The film Lagaan is all about how ordinary people can do extraordinary deeds. It's about bringing out something from within us. Something which has been hidden and long forgotten.
Lagaan also repeats the popular motif of Bollywood movies , the defeat of British colonial rules at the hands of indians , but situates the struggle for decolonisation on apparently matually exclusive domains - cricket an ' Elite ' sport and subltern politics.
The film is set in the Victorian period of india ' s colonial British Raj. The story is about a small village whose inhabitants burdened by high taxes , they have to face challenge to avoid taxes . If they win no tax payment and if they lose it will doubled.
Lagaan recovers the experience of subltern group. Bhuvan takes an opportunity to bring happiness into the lives of villagers. As an leader he accepts the challenge to play the cricket match. He not dream for himself but for the goods of his villagers.
His determination was very firm.despite opposition of everyone , he faces the challenge for problem solving. He motivates , encourages other and building the team. He has enough understanding and maturity for leadership. A team of different individuals and unite them to achieve goal.
In aspect of patriotism , as a matter of racial and colonial Pride , here is a metaphor of game cricket. Which suggests the patriotism as well as elements of post colonialism in the British time.
This film also reflects elements of casticism , how the untouchability was influence other aspects at that time. When one character from lower class , other members and villagers have resistance against it , despite of his skills. It shows that no matter what happens lower class people very badly treated by higher class people.
